Porous electrodes are prevalent in many electrochemical energy storage devices such as Li ion Batteries. Efficient design of thermal management systems however, hinges on accurate measurements of the thermal conductivity of porous electrodes, at variety of length scales, ranging from the active particle scale to single layer and stack level, which are currently lacking; due to the complex geometry of the porous electrodes that presents practical difficulties in probing their thermal conductivity. This dissertation demonstrated new experimental methods to enable the measurements of global and local (i.e. particle length scale) thermal conductivities of Li ion batteries porous electrodes using time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR). The introduced methods offer a new avenue to understand and engineer the thermal transport mechanism, at variety of length scales, within broad range of nano and microporous materials.
