In this thesis, the nanoantennas consisting of single and multiple metallic nanoparticles operating in the optical range are investigated. Based on the discussion of localized surface plasmon resonance, the mechanism of nanoantennas is demonstrated and their optical properties in the near-field are theoretically studied extensively in terms of different configurations. Through accurate characterization of dispersive permittivity as well as proper method developed for effective calculation, nanoantennas? optical performance depending on various influencing factors is determined especially covering a broad frequency range. Considerable effects are proposed to conduct a comprehensive study on tunable characteristics of nanoantennas. In addition, for certain nanoantenna designs, their radiation features in the far-field are innovatively explored. Computed antenna design specifications such as radiation patterns, gain and directivity are provided in quantity. Optimum nanoantenna design can be achieved by adjusting these parameters. Such study has promising applications in microscopy, spectroscopy, and kinds of optical devices.
