Abstract: This is a biography of Fu Lei the translator [1908 to 1966]. It discusses his role in the intellectual history of modern China. He is well-known for his translations of French literature but his contribution towards cultural development is little examined. This is a case study of an intellectual response from a translator and cultural critic to ideological trends. It is suggested that because of Fu?s professional ethic there is greater thematic coherence in his work than previously noted.
