dc.description.abstract | After the Opium War, the various exchange activities between China and other countries gradually flourish and become more frequent. During the reign of Emperor Tongzhi, the Chinese envoy Bin Chun successfully led a delegation to European countries and this was the first time Qing government sent officials abroad for inspection. In addition to his diary “Chengcha biji”, Bin Chun created two volumes of poetry collection: Haiguo shengyou cao and Tianwai guifan cao, documenting his overseas experiences. Hence, Bin Chun became one of the earliest authors in China who produced poetry and knowledge of foreign countries. Despite his fame, the literature reveals that relatively little is known about Bin Chun’s poetry. Consequently, this study aims to narrow this research gap and conduct an in-depth analysis of Bin Chun’s poetry, reviewing his foreign experiences, investigating the cultural exchange activities and illustrating the relations between the countries, as well as providing a new perspective for the interpretation of his poetry. | |
