dc.description.abstract | End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a rising public health issue globally. Singapore has ranked fifth in incidence of ESRD. The well-established risk factors of ESRD are hypertension and diabetes; however, the vast majority of dietary, lifestyle and environmental factors of ESRD have not been comprehensively studied, especially in Asian populations. We used data from Singapore Chinese Health Study, a prospective cohort study including 63,257 adults. Our findings showed pulse pressure had the strongest association with ESRD compared with other blood pressure indices. Further our findings showed indoor air-pollution (incense use), sleep durations, alcohol drinking were risk factors of ESRD. Finally, our data showed adherence to healthful dietary patterns was associated with a lower risk of ESRD, especially for the obese participants. The findings contribute to the knowledge on the modifiable risk factors of ESRD in Asian populations and provide the scientific basis for lifecourse interventions on ESRD prevention. | |
