dc.description.abstract | This paper studies the effect of female labour force participation (FLFP) on women's decision-making power in Bangladesh. Following the termination of the MultiFiber Arrangement which restricted garment exports from developing countries, the proliferation of Ready-Made Garment (RMG) factories across Bangladesh provided avenues for women to improve their bargaining positions, such as through the acquisition of income through FLFP. I exploit this policy shift to conduct a Difference-in-Difference regression across districts with varying RMG-factory composition, exploring effects on women's decision-making and children's health outcomes. I find significantly positive effects on FLFP, women's participation in deciding visits to relatives and friends, and deciding their healthcare; and negative effects on children's stunting and wasting, thus supporting the claim that FLFP increases bargaining power. Results from exploring treatment effects across educational attainment provide support to the mechanisms of earned and unearned income - attained through the growth of the RMG industry - that increase bargaining power. | |
