This study focuses on the literary concept of cishi词史, which refers to the ci-poetry that recorded the historical events experienced by the author or the poets who wrote them. The thesis covers the richest period for the writing of cishi in the Republic of China: Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). At the same time, the Kuo Min Tang (KMT) government’s cultural policy also promoted the flourishing of cishi writing. Through this research, the author will answer the question of how this literary tradition was developed in the political and cultural environment in the Republic of China, especially during wartime period, and what impact this development had on the ci-genre itself. The thesis also tries to explore how modern political and publishing institutions played a significant role in reconstructing the classical literary concepts and innovation in traditional literary genres.
