dc.description.abstractOver the past 40 years, the industrial base and nature of our workforce has changed from one of labour-intensive to a high value-added and high technology industry. With the advent of the New Economy and new work processes, there is a need to allow multiple and integrated uses in industrial land. The Jurong Town Corporation (JTC) has thus rolled out a new concept, integrating work-live-play activities in a single area. This is part of its Industrial Park 21 (I-park 21) blueprint aimed to create a new environment for industrialists in Singapore, as well as enhance Singapore's attractiveness as a place for investors to base factories and manufacturing-related services. This has prompted the author to embark on this study to determine the relevance of the iPark development in relation to the demands of modern-day industrialists and workers. The ideal premises of industrialists and workers are also examined through detailed interviews and surveys. The findings of this study shows that industrialists view accessibility to labour pool and flexibility in usage of space as determining factors in relocating their premises, whereas workers deem accessibility, shorter commuting time and conducive working environment as the important factors. The iParks concept is generally well received by both industrialists and workers. Industrialists welcome the new concept due to accessibility to labour pool, prestige of the area and availability of complementing facilities. Workers are mainly attracted by its pleasant environment. All the above findings indicate that the rationales prompting the development of iParks by JTC is a valid one as not only are the demands of industrialists and workers met, but it also serves to optimize the scarce land resources in the nation.
