Despite man's great advances in science and technology, man still needs to go back to the unspoilt nature for recreation, relaxation and renewal of his life force. He has also realised that in order to survive as a species, he must pay attention to the environment in which he lives. In the pursuit of gains, he must yet ensure that there is enough of the natural landscape left tor him to enjoy. At the same time, he must consciously curb his activities where such activities are causing environmental pollution. Man cannot pursue a policy that will destroy the natural resources of the earth without destroying himself in the process. The park is probably the oldest feature of the city created specifically to serve the recreational needs of man Parks were built at public expense often for a set of interrelate motive which included a philosophy of social reform to improve the physical and moral welfare of the working classes. The characteristics of park users differ, yet their needs for outdoor recreation still persist, though for most, it may not be significant. How parks are utilised would slowly but surely determine the fate of parks. As Singapore progresses into the 21st century, there would be more competing demands for land and for some uses, they may be more necessary than parks. Would a sad day arrive, when what is left of parks is only an isolated and unwanted land? The answer lies in the opinions and use patterns of Singaporeans.
