dc.description.abstract | This paper attempts to understand the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Singaporean families which engage in long distance communication because some family members are overseas for prolonged periods. It seeks to understand how these technologies aid or impede communication within these families and their resulting effect on the relationships amongst the family members. This study seeks to apply the theoretical principles of the strategic and motivated user, expected and emergent effects (SMEE) framework to understand how family members utilize ICTs to facilitate their long distance communications. This will be done through a series of in-depth ethnographic interviews with families that engage in long distance communication through the use of new media. A thorough analysis would then be conducted to explore the range of possibilities for the use of new media, the convenience they offer and the overall effectiveness of these new media in long distance communication. | |
