ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Onthophagus beetles are emerging model systems in sexual selection studies but how sexual selection mediate reproductive trait expression in tropical species is unexplored. Here, I investigated reproductive trait variation of Onthophagus cf. babirussa across populations in Singapore and Malaysia. Most populations exhibited male-biased sexual size dimorphism, likely due to variation in strength of selection pressures acting on sexes. Allometric coefficients suggest higher investment in horn length than testes size and sperm length, indicating trade-offs between precopulatory and postcopulatory traits. Full-sib condition-dependent experiment showed dung quality (environment, E) and genotype (G) affected both sexes’ body sizes but G×E interactions in male body size, suggesting sex-specific selection mediated phenotypic plasticity. Parents provisioned more lower quality dung and more was needed to achieve phenotypes similar to offspring reared in higher quality. Wild-caught individuals carried differential nematode loads that varied with traits but lab-reared individuals had no nematodes, suggesting beetles served as intermediate hosts. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/187883 |
