ASSESSMENT OF HOSTEL FACILITIES IN THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE

Abstract

There have been calls from politicians and educators alike to expand the National University of Singapore (NUS) to become a "world class" university. It is hoped that the best students from around the Asian region and possibly beyond will come to study at NUS and that NUS will be able to compete with the more established universities like Harvard, Cambridge and Princeton. With this ambition, the expansion of the university has begun in earnest with the upgrading of the current facilities. This is in anticipation of the influx of students coming to NUS as the current facilities might not be able to accommodate the increased intake expected. This dissertation assesses the standard of current hostel facilities on the campus. It was found the current facilities were rated generally good on the whole. However, respondents of the survey conducted felt that there was much room for improvement and cited problems such as lack of security, lack of transportation etc. Also the respondents have suggested some solutions to some of the problems like employing more security guards to overcome the lack of security and the inclusion of a Light Rail Transport System (LRT) linking the campus to the nearby Clementi Town Centre.
