dc.description.abstractGlobally, coral reef ecosystems are being degraded by multiple local anthropogenic stressors and climate change. For many reefs, declines in coral cover are often accompanied by dramatic increases in the abundance of fleshy macroalgae, resulting in intense competition between corals and macroalgae. However, the dynamics of coral–macroalgal interactions and the mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. In my dissertation, I first examined how the intensity of coral–macroalgal competition varied spatially and temporally, and how this impacted coral growth. Next, I compared the relative influence of direct versus indirect, water-mediated, macroalgal interactions on the physiology and microbiomes of corals across various coral–macroalgal pairings. Through a series of aquarium- and field-based experiments, I also assessed the role of allelopathy in mediating coral–macroalgal interactions. Overall, findings from my thesis contribute to advancing our understanding on the processes that shape coral–macroalgal interactions on coral reefs during the Anthropocene.
