ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The contamination of heavy metals in agricultural soil has attracted widespread attentions due to their potential threats to humans and the environment. In order to reduce heavy metals accumulation of vegetables in contaminated soils, a kind of wood-derived biochar (at 10% volume ratio) and proprietary soil remediation additive 6B (at 5% optimized mass ratio) were used as soil amendments. To investigate whether biochar and the additives could immobilize heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn) in soil and prevent or reduce their uptake by vegetables, leafy xiaobaicai and rooty radish were chosen for the germination experiment. Compared with contaminated soil without any addition, biochar and additive 6B amendment improved germination rate of radish by 20% and 55%, respectively. This study proved that heavy metals uptake by leafy and rooty vegetables was largely reduced after immobilization in contaminated agricultural soil and also proved that soil-bound heavy metals were partially bioavailable, while immobilized heavy metals by both biochar and additive 6B were NOT bioavailable. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/184306 |
