THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD AND INTERVENTION IN THE SINGAPORE ECONOMY

Abstract

This Academic Exercise will study the Singapore government's intervention m the economy through its foremost instrument of development. The underlying causes, motivations, and objectives of the Singapore government's intervention in not only the economic but extra-economic realms, and the political preconditions for effective intervention will be highlighted. The study of the Economic Development Board (EDB) as an institution of intervention begins with a brief evolutionary perspective, charting its key points of interaction with the economy. It traces the development of the EDB to its present status as an all-encompassing instrument of development. Major themes will include the EDB's philosophy, personnel and organizational features, and its relationship with the government and its agencies. Singapore's developmental experience with transnational corporations (TNCs), and how this relationship is managed by, and through the EDB is surveyed. The prospects of the future of the Singapore - TNC alliance will be examined. Issues pertaining to Singapore's economic, and socio-political landscape as a result of the EDB's operationalization of the government's capacity in the economy will be discussed. The EDB will be assessed as the bridge between the state and market, and between Singapore and the external, international economy.
