dc.description.abstract“Makkal”: An Ethnographic Study of Tamil Clubbing Subculture seeks to analyse the presence of Tamil clubs against the backdrop of rising consumerism in Singapore and the nation's policy of multiracialism. It also analyses the phenomena of a youth market divided along line of both class and ethnicity using specifically, Tamil working class youths as a case study. This study also investigates the reasons Tamil clubs have been usurped by this segment of the population. Finally, the study also involves Tamil working class youths and their alternative methods of attaining status through club rituals using characteristics associated with ethnic identity (including ethnic stereotypes).
