Abstract: The main objective of this study was to examine the notions of womanhood across three generations of Chinese Singaporean women. Focus was directed at four main areas, namely motherhood, marriage, family and work. The data gathered was analysed using a lifecourse framework. The key findings are that traditional notions of womanhood are still rather pervasive among all three generations. Women still continue to be associated with their roles as mothers and wives first and foremost. There is tremendous societal pressure put on women to fulfil and excel in these roles. The notions of the "normal family" can severely limit the choices a woman can make. This may result in women having to give up their personal hopes and ambitions if they are deemed incompatible with her family responsibilities.
