This is a study of the production and appropriation of space in Borders, the bookstore in Singapore. How does Borders, a privately owned space, when read as a public space by its users, is given social meanings through its utilization? One example of the creative reproduction of space by its users, is the transformation of the space opened up for Borders events into an outlet for consensus shaping and social commentary. The concept of the organic intellectual, a termed coined by Antonio Gramsci, will be explored with reference to the nature of Borders event.
