Abstract: A microwave propagation experiment has been carried out in Singapore's tropical region. The results are analyzed in this thesis using a statistical method. Rainfall rate characteristics play an important role in the prediction of microwave propagation. The cumulative distribution of rainfall rate in Singapore for a period of 10-month is given and a comparison with that of CCIT is made. The microwave attenuation characteristics of horizontally polarized continuous wave at frequencies 15 and 38.6 GHz are analyzed. The long-term cumulative distribution and attenuation duration cumulative are given for each frequency. A new model is proposed to estimate microwave attenuation due to tropical rainfall. This model is well developed in accordance with experimental results. The frequency scaling formula for predicting rainfall attenuation at one frequency from those at other frequencies is derived. These results are useful for system designers in the application of microwave communications, both line-of-sight and satellite communications.
