In the first part of the paper we define environmental pollution and discuss the various associated economic theories and principles. We note that pollution may be man-made or natural and the solution to the problem may depend on that. We study both fiscal and non-fiscal pollution control instruments that have been considered in theory and in practice. A brief account of the pollution control instruments adopted in Singapore is given. Lastly, we discuss the haze problem in the region and its possible solutions. Following this, a conclusion is made for the issues addressed in the paper.
