Abstract: The concept of transnational urbanism has provided a grounded optic to understand transnationalism beyond an abstract space of flows. While more scholars have begun to engage with this optic, they have mainly operationalised it at the city or neighbourhood level – often with a migrant oriented slant. Using the specific-scale locality of a building – Lucky Plaza, this thesis seeks to broaden the scale at which transnational urbanism can occur. Utilising an assemblage framework, this thesis seeks to map out how both socio-material actors are involved in exercising capacities to exert a mixture of material and/or expressive roles that produce the building as a transnational product and platform to ground, maintain and reproduce transnational flows. Based on ethnographic practices of everyday life, especially of the dominant migrant group of Filipinos, in Lucky Plaza, I convey a thick description of urban space to activate the power of the assemblage. An assemblage approach attends to the complexity, multiplicity and diversity of agents across scales to understand the fluidity and contested placemaking in situated urban contexts. Working on an alternative urban scale whilst utilising an assemblage framework, I seek to complement and provide a nuanced contribution to the optic of transnational urbanism. In the product and platform of Lucky Plaza, the transnational is made real, and the real made transnational.
