Abstract: The loss of nutrients from soils due to leaching may result in detrimental effects on soil health, and also contaminate water in neighbouring waterbodies. Although soil leaching has been extensively studied in the context of agriculture, little is known about its effects on tropical freshwater ecosystems. Through leaching experiments, this thesis fills this knowledge gap by examining the influence of soil physico-chemical properties on the physico-chemistry of the groundwater and streams in the Nee Soon Swamp Forest (NSSF). Soil samples were collected from various subcatchments in the NSSF and analysed for properties such as pH, soil texture, organic matter content, major cations, effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) and base saturation. Rainwater samples collected were analysed for pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), major cations and anions, and acid neutralising capacity (ANC). Rainwater was allowed to leach through the soils and the leachates obtained were analysed for the changes in physico-chemical properties. The leachates represent the groundwater that eventually discharges into the streams. Results obtained from data analyses indicate the inability of the soils to retain their nutrients, and that soil ECEC has a significant influence on leachate properties including electrical conductivity, DOC and ANC. Leachate pH was found to be directly influenced by soil pH. The spatial variation of soil properties throughout NSSF and the resulting variation of leachate characteristics suggests that the quality of stream water within the upper portion of the catchment is vulnerable to the negative effects of soil leaching. However, the leaching behaviour of soils is affected by a myriad of hydro-geomorphological processes and external environmental factors. While this thesis serves as a baseline study on soil leaching in the NSSF, further studies are needed to strengthen the knowledge in this field of study.
