This study was undertaken to examine the role various blood lipids play in promoting coronary artery disease in a multi-racial Asian population. Such data in non-western societies is sadly lacking. The investigation set out to show that while risk factors may be universal, ethnic differences may exist. To study three ethnic groups, multiple clinicaJ risk factors, and severaJ lipid fractions, including recently characterized lipoprotein (a), a large cohort was mandated. To minimize error, all lipids were analyzed in a standardized laboratory. To maximize clinical precision, coronary angiograms were carefully obtained and meticulously scored.
