dc.description.abstract | Resistance to globalization arise because of the nature of globalization itself. Seen as an instrument to neoliberalism in particular, globalization is heavily criticised for causing the many socio-economic, environmental and even political problems in the world today. However, it will be seen in this thesis that although there seem to be one dominant form of globalization, such conceptualization can be queried and alternative visions of globalization is possible if the appropriate strategies are undertaken. It is seen that in this thesis, the civil society groups comprising groups which are into labour, migrant, environmental, women, and human rights' issues, can actually be a powerful force that can rise up to resist globalization. This thesis will show that an integral component to effective strategies in resisting globalization lies in the production of scale in which the civil society groups engage in. Just as TNCS for example are able to justify their activities and policies by presenting a need for a 'global reach' to cope in a 'global' economy, civil society groups can also present their own 'global' agenda of resisting the current predominant form of globalization and rearticulate a globalization which is more democratized and beneficial for the people as a whole. | |
