dc.description.abstract | The present work focuses primarily on the design, fabrication, numerical simulation and experimental testing of vaporization liquid microthrusters using deionised water in simulated vacuum and sea level conditions. This VLM system is simple, reliable and offers flexibility for a wide range of liquid and gas propellants. The life of the propulsion system is based on the amount of liquid propellant available in the system. The present work reports on the cold gas microthruster development, utilization of feed gas in a liquid fuelled thruster, its numerical modelling and the experimental study in simulated vacuum conditions and under a range of pressure conditions. Three microthrusters with semi divergence angle of 15, 20 and 28° are fabricated using stainless steel 304 and have been tested at sea level as well as in vacuum operating conditions. Various geometries with optimized divergence angles and internal channels have been tested and reported. A microthruster with a straight channel geometry have been shown to have the highest thrust of 979.27 𝜇N with a standard deviation of 3.96 𝜇N at 200 °C microthruster operating temperature and 1.5 𝜇l/s of liquid propellant flow rate. | |
