Abstract: As fundamental dimensions of social cognition, competence and warmth shape social judgements, and determine people’s attitudes and behaviors toward referent others. Although competent people tend to be viewed favourably, it is not clear about potential negative consequences of being competent. Herein I draw from social dominance theory and social exchange theory, and present an integrative model that simultaneously examines the curses and blessings of competence. I first developed and validated a scale of perceived instrumentality. Then, I employed the perceived instrumentality measure to empirically test the theoretical model. Findings suggest that supervisors are more likely to perceive subordinate competence as threatening and thus engage in abusive supervision when they perceive subordinates as cold; and supervisors are more likely to perceive competent subordinates as instrumental and thus form high-quality LMX when supervisors have a bottom-line mentality. I conclude with discussion of theoretical contributions, practical implications, and directions for future research.
