This academic exercise highlights the nature of gamelan music in Singapore which, as a relatively new practice, has had little documentation. The style of the music as played in Singapore derives from Central Javanese styles which have been brought over by Javanese who migrated to Singapore. I will contrast gamelan in Singapore with that found in Central Java to highlight the differences that have developed, as well as the features that have been retained. Imported from Java and planted in a new context, gamelan music in Singapore has evolved quite differently from its counterpart in Java. Internal social factors, human psychological motivations and contact with other societies have influenced the process of music change.
