It is a commonly accepted notion that the Nine Leaves Poets (Jiuye Shiren) embody the only writing paradigm of the modernist poetry in 1940sa?? China. Much academic attention has been paid to the above mentioned poets since 1982 when Collected Poems of Nine Leaves i??Jiuye Jii??was published for the first time. Based on my fieldwork conducted in the fall of 2003, my thesis intends to challenge such an opinion. It explores the background of the Chinese modernist poetry, the introduction of Western modernist poetry, the themes and styles of Chinese modernist poetry, and the construction of Chinese modernist poetics. By discovering many relatively unknown but important poets and integrating Western historical narratives about modernism and modernity, this study proposes to re-examine modernist poetry in China in the 1940s.
