Abstract: The debate on Lu Xuna??s Old Tales Retold began just after its inception and lasts until today. This dissertation attempts to analyze this issue from a new perspective: genre poetics. Under the theoretical framework of M. M. Bakhtina??s theory of carnivalization, I would like to re-read the fiction to attempt an alternate explanation, which not only sheds light on Lu Xuna??s text, but also explores other texts of sub-genre fiction both synchronically and diachronically. Through a selected study of cases (Lu Xun, Shi Zhecun, Liu Yichang, Li Bihua, Ye Si, Xi Xi and Tao Ran) from a very large amount of texts belonging to the same sub-genre, this dissertation aims to provide new insight in the three following aspects: 1. To generalize and argue the individualization of Old Tales Retold type fiction and discuss them from the perspective of subjective interventions; 2. To analyze the Bahktina??s complex theory of carnivalization; 3. To endeavor to find a possible yardstick to identify successful historical rewriting in this new sub-genre fiction.
