dc.description.abstract | INTRODUCTION This design thesis is an experimental design about a future place for research in Information Technology. The specific project being undertaken is within Singapore Science Park and consists of a R & D division being supported by administrative, training and recreational facilities. ANALYSIS OF THE ISSUES PRIMARY ISSUE – A HUMANISED WORKPLACE Technology affects us in almost all aspects of our lives today. We spend a large portion of our waking hours at the place of work, where conditions are sometimes less than optimum in terms of efficiency and performance. In this type of workplace man is both physically and intellectually isolated from each other. In this project where man is engaged in R & D his sensitivity and thus requirement of his surrounding is crucial to his performance. Here is an attempt to reinterpret what is a humanised workplace. SECONDARY ISSUE-DESIGN TO ADDRESS EXPANSION, FLEXIBILITY AND ADAPTABILITY High technology industry is a fast growing and changing field. How successful R & D workplace can be, depends on the ability to expand and the speed that it adapts new technology/product. This implies that the ability of R & D building to adapt and rearrange working areas to accommodate changing research programme is an important issue. CONCLUSION This thesis sets out to experiment and investigate on possible ways to address the issues of humanising a R&D workplace and also go on to test the possibility of growth and flexibility of the workplace. To make the design project successful, a correct and proper compromise would have to be reached. | |
