SENIOR CITIZENS' RESORT : PASIR RIS

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Ageing is a life-long process in which everyone faces. Because it is both inevitable and irreversible, it is of utmost importance that we hold a positive rather than a negative attitude towards it; and face the process of ageing, and the aged, as a challenge instead of a burden. PROPOSAL: This thesis proposes the development of a sea-side resort which caters specially to the needs of senior citizens. It is seen as an extension of existing Senior Citizens' Clubs operating within Community Centres; as well as a provision of a permanent place for the elderly to call their own for health, social and recreational activities. LOCATION: Singapore is an island, however, majority of the population live in HDB (Housing and Development Board) flats away from the sea. The selected site is situated at one end of Pasir Ris Park, with the advantage of the sea front. TASK: (General Aims) One of the main aims of this sea-side resort is to maximise the frontage of the sea, by means of artificially increasing the perimeter of the building-coast line. To look into the appropriate choice of materials, using it to affect the atmosphere of the place; the scale of the building; and its propriety both on site, as well as its relationship to the sea. CHALLENGE: (Specific Aims) Architecture is and must always be first and foremost, a social response to the needs of the end-user. The success of this resort requires an understanding of the varied needs of senior citizens, and translating these needs into tangible architectural built-forms. This thesis takes on the challenge of bringing out some of these qualities, e.g. THE NEED FOR CONTACT AS WELL AS PRIVACY, and especially that of A SLOWER PACE OF LIFE, which will make the resort not just another holiday complex, but specifically a resort for senior citizens -- a place they can call, their own!
