The globalization of anime, manga and video games has led to the development and popularity of the yaoi genre and comic events in Japan and Indonesia. In this dissertation, I use the method of an ethnographic study to analyze the participatory culture of Japanese and Indonesian yaoi fans in Tokyo and Jakarta comic events, with an explicit focus on the concept of hiding the artistic exchange and consumption of yaoi content within public space. This research aims to analyze comic events that allow yaoi content within countries in which such content is socially controversial. In these events, I pay attention to the social interaction, environment and event organization to understand how these factors create a community of exclusivity and safe spaces and, in that process, how they are able to hide yaoi content from the general public.
