Abstract: Objective: This study was designed to collect real-time child smartphone usage data to better understand child smartphone usage habits and to examine whether parental control variables influenced child smartphone usage duration after controlling for child factors. The relationship between smartphone usage and addiction were also examined. Method: 70 Parent-child pairs completed surveys (i.e. smartphone use and access, self-control, life satisfaction and smartphone addiction) and provided smartphone usage screenshots across one week. Parents were given extra parental measures. Results: The children’s screenshot data suggest that they use more social media, especially social media streaming platform: ‘Youtube’, compared to games. Regression analyses indicate that the child’s age and parental perspectives and mediation influence a child’s smartphone usage duration. Whereas only child self-control, and not parental factors, influence child smartphone addiction outcomes. Implications: Parent’s addressing their children’s smartphone usage durations should look beyond gaming, to include the time spent on social networking applications, especially ‘Youtube’. Building the child’s self-control may also help to mitigate the child’s risk of smartphone addiction.
