dc.description.abstract | Acute biomechanical response of the optic nerve head (ONH) in living human eyes was assessed by elevating the intraocular pressure (IOP) transiently using the ophthalmodynamometer. The structures of the ONH such as lamina cribrosa (LC), peripapillary sclera (PPS) and neuro-retinal rim (NRR) were imaged using optical coherence tomography and the changes following the IOP elevations and after the IOP reducing surgery were assessed quantitatively. The depth of LC was affected by gender, race, and other ocular parameters. The posterior bowing of the PPS was found in old age and glaucoma. The NRR was compressed by acute IOP elevations in glaucoma eyes but not in control eyes. The optic nerve biomechanics was associated with functional loss in primary open angle glaucoma but not in primary angle closure glaucoma; and was changed after the IOP reducing surgery. The optic disc biomechanics could be useful as a biomarker for progression. | |
