The performance and capabilities of Japanese expatriates have become crucial as the Japanese multinationals are rapidly expanding their international operations. Many studies have been carried out thus far to examine Japanese management practices or to compare Japanese practices with those of host countries, but few studies deal with top management practices or with the performance of executives. Hence, it is the intention of this research to look into this aspect in an exploratory manner. The purpose of this study is to examine the responsibilities, performance appraisal criteria and the methods of appraising the performances of chief executives in Japanese subsidiaries operating in Singapore. About 62 chief executives responded to the survey. The findings are identified and discussed in this project.
