Title: | High anisotropy hcp CoPt media for perpendicular magnetic recording | Authors: | PANDEY KOASHAL KISHOR MANI | Keywords: | CoPt, High anisotropy, Perpendicular magnetic recording | Issue Date: | 2-Jan-2009 | Citation: | PANDEY KOASHAL KISHOR MANI (2009-01-02). High anisotropy hcp CoPt media for perpendicular magnetic recording. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This thesis focused on increasing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (Ku) of CoCrPt based magnetic recording media to increase the magnetic recording areal density. A large Ku value to ~9 x 106 erg/cc was achieved in the Co72Pt28 film deposited on smooth Ta seedlayer surface. This Ku value allowed thermally stable grain size down to 4.5 nm diameter and to be able to support the areal density of 1 Tbits/in2. A layer engineering approach was adopted to control the microstructure of recording layer to achieve large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It was observed that a dual-layer structure of Ru underlayer was effective in reducing the intergranular exchange interaction and grain size, and induced favorable environment for large SNR. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy analysis indicated that a large Ku for Co72Pt28 film could be attributed to the improved hcp stacking. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/16696 |
