dc.description.abstractThis thesis aims to critically examine ICT for development projects (ICT4D) to understand the interlinkages between the conception of development influencing the content and design of the project, the technology usage and the socio- economic context of its implementation. We do this through a case study of one of the major ICT for development (ICT4D) initiatives in the traditional manufacturing sector in Rajasthan, India, namely the carpet weaving industry. First, this study seeks to understand the conceptions of development underlying the design and content of the Computer Aided Carpet Design-Centre (CACD) project. Second, it tries to understand how far these underlying conceptions of development are in consonance with the larger socio- economic context of its implementation. Further, an attempt is made to explore and analyze causative, impeding and enabling factors behind the differential impact on the three targeted beneficiaries of this project- the exporters, the carpet designers and the carpet weavers.
