Abstract: The young purplish Enigmonia aenigmatica transferred onto leaves grew a golden yellow shell, while the yellow juveniles produce a purple shell when grown on other substrates besides the mangrove leaves. This provides evidence that the two colour morphs are not separate species. An analysis of the pigments found in the shell of both colour morphs indicates that the purple pigments are uroporphyrins. No pigments seemed to be present in the golden yellow shells. No byssus-drifting threads appear to be produced by the young adults of E. aenigmatica. The growth rates of these bivalves increased with a longer period of tidal submergence and the younger ones had a higher growth rate compared to the older ones.
