dc.description.abstractThe objective of this work is to design near-field UHF RFID reader antennas with wide coverage areas and long detection distances. In this thesis, three designs of near-field UHF RFID reader antenna are presented. A top-to-bottom coupled segmented loop antenna, a side-by-side coupled segmented loop antenna, and a loop antenna with phase shifters are proposed. Segmented line structures are introduced to keep the current flowing on the electrically large antenna in phase. Phase shifters are proposed to provide a 180 degree phase shift to the phase-inversed current so that the current flowing on the electrically large antenna is kept in a single direction. These antennas, with electrical sizes larger than at least one operating wavelength, produce strong and even magnetic field distribution over the near-field interrogation zones. Compared to conventional solid loop antennas of similar interrogation zones, the proposed antennas are shown to afford wider coverage areas and longer RFID tag detection distances.
