MAGNETIC NANOCOMPOSITES FOR BIOMEDICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Iron Oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have been widely employed in various biomedical and environmental applications, including magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment due to its small size, unique magnetic properties, biocompatibility and tunable nature. The particle size of IONPs used are usually below superparamagnetic critical size, so that they can be suspended without any aggregation. But the superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles have poor magnetic response which restricts the application of IONPs. In this thesis work, efforts were made to develop a magnetic nanocomposite that has good magnetic response and colloidal stability by tuning their size, shape, aspect ratio, surface functionalization, frequency and the field applied. An universal technique to suspend hydrophobic ferromagnetic nanoparticles irrespective of their size, shape or magnetic property was proposed and extensively studied for magnetic hyperthermia and heavy metal removal. For improving the efficiency, IONPs of different size, geometry and aspect ratio was explored. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/165048 |
