Abstract: Penang Hokkien is a variety of Southern Min dialect spoken in Penang and its surrounding northern states of Peninsula Malaysia. This dissertation is intended to provide a systematic account of Penang Hokkien grammar, and demonstrate how various aspects of the dialect are shaped by languages in contact. The dissertation consists of two parts: Part I covers the grammar of Penang Hokkien, while Part II describes the contact-induced features in Penang Hokkien.
