Singapore's retail scene has undergone a considerable transformation over the past 18 year period (1971-1988). Today, the pattern of retailing has changed from the traditional prewar shophouse to the modern shopping complex, where a "one stop shopping" concept has gained popularity and has lead to a rapid increase in the development of planned shopping centres. As a result, competition among shopping centres has grown in intensity and an awareness of the factors which contribute to the success of a centre is now of utmost importance. This dissertation aims to identify and highlight the factors necessary for the success of a shopping centre. In the course of illustrating the factors, there is a case study of one such development, that is Raffles City.
