The history of a city is recorded not only in books but also in buildings. However, conservation of the historic areas should be concerned with buildings as well as the way of life and activities therein. The success of the conservation scheme can be ensured by getting direct information from the people living in the area for the planner or planning authority to understand the socio-economic characteristics of the area and also by providing incentives for them to carry out rehabilitation work. The study of Kg. Glam area indicated that majority of the residents would like to remain there and welcome the authority's move to conserve the area. However, the future impact on residents and businesses is uncertain. There has been an increasing proportion of the aged population in the area which may raise the issue of whether they can afford the renovation work. The expected social problems should also be considered. Furthermore, there is doubt as to whether the tenants will be given priority to remain in the area and continue their businesses after restoration is completed. There is also the uncertainty of future increase in rent. The author feels that the authority has not done enough to keep the residents and business owners informed of the proposals as indicated by the limited knowledge of the scheme. Their co¬ operation and support will help to make the conservation project viable. In the process, the authority has to strike a balance between conflicting policies for conservation to be beneficial to the local community.
