There are several schools of thought on the determinants of union membership. The traditional schools are the "saturationist" and historical. However more importantly, more recent studies on the determinants of union membership are based on the relative benefits and costs of union membership to individual workers over time. Normally these studies are based on time-series data collected over a long period of time. Due to the lack of time-series data, this exercise only attempts to study the structural factors which may affect union membership. The main variables used in this exercise are personal-related and job-related variables. They were then subjected to a regressional analysis using union density as the dependent variable. Several conclusive results were obtained and they were duly presented in the exercise.
