Abstract: This thesis presents a new Data-In-Network (DIN) technology, a flexible network-layer logical loop where data circulates continuously in order to enhance multicast communications. Improvements achieved include enable multicast communications across time, reduce high delay of application-level multicast, and optimize large inter-domain multicast routing table entries. Four specific solutions have been proposed to achieve each of the above namely, Video-In-Network (VIN), DINCast, DINPeer, and (G)MPLS-based DINloop_Net. VIN enables multicast across both space and time by circulating video data continuously in the optical loop. DINCast and DINPeer are proposed to optimize communication delay of application-level multicast based on shared multicast tree and overlay network respectively. Finally, (G)MPLS-based DINloop_Net is proposed and implemented in the core network with MPLS/GMPLS techniques to reduce large IP inter-domain multicast routing table size. The effectiveness of the above solutions has been determined through mathematic modeling and analysis, as well as simulation results.
