As wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) based optical networks carry huge volume of traffic, maintaining a high level of service availability at an acceptable level of overhead is an important issue. In this thesis, we address the problem of lightpath routing with survivability requirements, such as restoration guarantee, recovery time, and reliability, under various traffic models, such as dynamic, static, and scheduled. We develop and evaluate the novel concept of segmented protection paths for routing fault-tolerant connections. We develop several integer linear programming formulations to solve capacity optimization problems in the design of survivable optical networks under various traffic models. We propose a segment-based partial protection scheme for routing connection requests with reliability requirements in a resource efficient manner. We then develop a distributed control algorithm for routing reliability-guaranteed connections. We conduct extensive simulation experiments to verify the effectiveness of all the proposed algorithms.
