Abstract: 

WE STUDY THE NUCLEATION OF FACETED ISLANDS IN THE PRESENCE OF EMBEDDED ISLANDS IN MULTILAYER STRANSKI-KRASTANOV SYSTEMS. IN PARTICULAR, WE EXAMINE THE DEPENDENCE OF THE NUCLEATION OF TOP ISLANDS ON THE STRUCTURES OF THE MULTILAYER SYSTEMS, WHICH INCLUDES THE SIZE, SPACING AND SHAPE OF THE EMBEDDED ISLANDS, THE DEPTH OF THE SPACER LAYER, AND THE THICKNESS OF THE TOP FILM.

BY ENERGY ANALYSIS FOR THE ISLANDS, THE ALIGNMENT, ANTI-ALIGNMENT AND OBLIQUE ALIGNMENT OF THE TOP ISLANDS WITH THE EMBEDDED ONES OBSERVED IN EXPERIMENTS CAN BE EXPLAINED FROM THE NUCLEATION POINT OF VIEW. THE NUCLEATION ENERGY BARRIER AND CRITICAL NUCLEUS SIZE OF THE TOP ISLAND CAN BE DRASTICALLY REDUCED COMPARED WITH THOSE IN A SINGLE-LAYER SYSTEM.

WE ALSO SHOW THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTERACTION ENERGY, WHICH TOGETHER WITH THE EMBEDDED ISLANDS CAN LEAD TO A METASTABLE STATE OR EVEN AN EQUILIBRIUM STATE FOR THE TOP ISLANDS.
