Abstract: The current study aims to investigate the impact of human activities on riverine water discharge, sediment load, water chemistry, and particularly carbon geochemistry in a case study of the Longdingjiang River, a mesoscale mountainous tributary of the Zhujiang (Pearl River), China. Both historical records over the last 40 years and water sample data in 2005 were employed to examine longterm change, seasonal and spatial variations of the river system and assess the controls of natural vs. anthropogenic factors.The signs of human impacts on river systems, particularly on sediment load and carbon fluxes have been suggested from both long-term trend analysis and spatial analysis in the Guanliang catchment. The decrease of bicarbonate export, coinciding with the decrease of sediment load, indicates a decrease of atmospheric CO2 sink strength, while the reservoirs/dams construction suggests an increase of CO2 sink strength through organic carbon storage with sediment deposition. Future research on flux measurements would be helpful for identifying the roles of such human activities on global carbon budget and global climate change.
