dc.description.abstract
THIS PAPER AIMS TO EXPLORE THE PHENOMENON OF COGNITIVE METAPHORS IN THE CONTEXT OF CHINESE AS WELL AS ADDRESS SOME THEORETICAL ISSUES ARISING FROM THE COGNITIVE METAPHOR THEORY. IN THE FIRST PART OF THE STUDY, I ANALYSE THE DOMINANT COGNITIVE METAPHORS PERVASIVELY USED IN CHINESE POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC DISCOURSE AND EXPLAIN THAT THEY CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO MAIN CATEGORIES BASED ON THEIR EXPERIENTIAL BASES: THE A??BODY-SPATIALA?? AND THE A??SOCIO-CULTURALA??. I ALSO EXPLAIN THAT IN THE GENERATION AND INTERPRETATION OF POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC METAPHORS, THE DUAL PRINCIPLES OF A??MULTIVALENCYA?? AND A??DIVERSIFICATIONA?? ARE IN OPERATION. IN THE SECOND PART OF THE PAPER, A FEW CONTROVERSIAL CONCEPTS PERTAINING TO THE COGNITIVE METAPHOR THEORY ARE CRITICALLY REVIEWED. IN THIS SECTION, I SHALL ALSO INTRODUCE MY OWN CRITICISM AGAINST THE THEORY, NAMELY, ITS OVER-EMPHASIS ON THE EMBODIED NATURE OF METAPHORS AND NEGLECT OF THEIR SOCIO-CULTURAL BASIS.
