This Advanced Study Project consists of two parts. The first part is a Literature Review of a few of the many existing models and theories on conflict and conflict management. The second part is a field research which attempts to test the validity of Deutsch's Theory of conflict and conflict management in real-life conflict situations. In the field research, a sample of 47 line-managers and subordinates working in two hotels was interviewed. Data collected was statistically and qualita tively analysed. It was found that Deutsch's theory was valid in the real life conflict situations. The main finding was that when con flicts between superiors and subordinates were handled in a co-operative context there were beneficial outcomes like increased work effort, acceptance of agreement and better relationship.
